What to expect
Most of the work I do is in person and face-to-face. However I also offer sessions using Skype - as I was surprised to discover how well this can work, either as one-off support when someone is travelling or as an ongoing way of working.
Whatever the method of connecting, we will often speak briefly by phone before arranging an initial meeting. The first full session is a chance for you to talk about the issues that concern you, and for each of us to see whether we think we can work well together. Sessions are usually 50 minutes long.
At the first session we agree a way forward, based on what you hope to get out of coming for therapy. If you wish to work with me further, we agree on how often we will meet and for how long. We may agree to meet for a certain number of sessions as a start, after which we can review progress and decide on what's next. If one or both of us feels that another practitioner or service will be more effective for you, I can help point you in the right direction.
Counselling sessions are mostly conversations focused on supporting you to bring about the changes you want. Practical exercises can also be powerful tools for growth. Sometimes I share my own experiences, but only where I believe this is appropriate and will support the client’s needs and aims in therapy. We will also review progress regularly.
